Hortencia Nuhu, 24

Medical student and advocate Hortencia Nuhu believes in empowering adolescent girls and young women in order for them to have every opportunity to lead prosperous lives.

As the Chairperson of Human Rights and Peace at the Tanzania Medical Students Association (TAMSA), Hortencia works to ensure young girls know their sexual and reproductive rights. Since 2015, she has worked with a number of NGOs to educate young girls on their rights and the importance of contraception.

Hortencia is currently developing an idea of her own to bring friendly and accessible health services to young women and girls with the aim of reducing unplanned pregnancies and HIV. An orphan herself, she has established her own Hortie Foundation, which focuses on providing support to orphans in her community.

Working on multiple fronts to make a difference, Hortencia believes in the power of collective impact. “By working together we can make great changes in our communities and make our world into a better place.”
